OUR CURRICULUM

At St Oswald’s, our curriculum reflects our Christian values of ‘Grow, Nurture and Inspire’. Our engaging and aspirational curriculum enables children to grow and flourish developing their understanding of the world, nurturing their own interests and inspiring them to make a difference in the world now and in their futures.

Our curriculum is sequentially planned using the National Curriculum to develop knowledge and skills throughout their time at St Oswald’s. Pupils are provided with meaningful activities and experiences that allow them to develop a deeper understanding and knowledge of the world around them. We carefully consider the school’s local context and the opportunities that are available for our children, ensuring we build upon and broaden the experiences for our pupils within and beyond the classroom.

Our English and Reading curriculum builds on the strong foundations of phonics, handwriting and spelling to develop confidence with reading fluently and having a comprehensive understanding of a wide range of genres and texts. Our texts are carefully selected to reflect our Christian values and link with our wider curriculum subjects to enable children to become immersed with their learning. The teaching of English progressively builds on embedding grammar skills that support children in producing their own writing reflecting the texts they have been exposed to.

Progression within the Maths curriculum is carefully considered and uses the strong foundations in number fluency help to build confidence and develop strategies to use across a range of contexts. Making links with real life contexts ensure the application of skills is relevant and embedded for our children, sequentially building upon prior knowledge and understanding to use across arithmetic calculations and problem solving.

Learning chapters are used for our wider curriculum subjects, which enables children to develop a deeper understanding of subjects and subsequent topics; building on prior learning where relevant. Big questions at the end of the units allow children to collaborate their understanding of subjects and topics to provide a thought provoking and meaningful answer that demonstrates their use of knowledge and skills.

We are proud of the unique opportunities and experiences that our curriculum provides for our children at St Oswald’s. Our passion and commitment to ensuring children recognise the impact they have on our wider community and the world today and the future is what we pride ourselves on the most.

‘Learners of today are the teachers of tomorrow.’
